Why Apple Music doesn’t scrobble natively

Last.fm builds your music profile from "scrobbles" — a record sent each time you play a song. Spotify sends these automatically once you connect your account. Apple has never added that integration to Apple Music, and the official Last.fm iOS app is limited by iOS background restrictions, so it regularly misses plays.

There are two ways to scrobble Apple Music on iPhone. The first is a dedicated background scrobbler app that watches what the Music app plays. These work, but iOS aggressively suspends background apps, so missed scrobbles and battery drain are common complaints.
