How to Turn AutoMix On or Off in Apple Music

Updated October 13, 2026 · Marquee Guides

Quick answer

In the Music app, tap the MiniPlayer at the bottom of the screen, tap the Up Next button, then tap the AutoMix button to turn it off. To stop songs blending everywhere, go to Settings, tap Apps, then Music, then Song Transitions, and turn Song Transitions off. You can also choose Crossfade there instead of AutoMix.

AutoMix blends the end of one song into the start of the next, so an album or playlist plays like one continuous mix. Some people love it. Others want to hear every song start and end the way it was recorded.

Here’s how to turn AutoMix off or on, how to use Crossfade instead, how to turn off song transitions completely, and why AutoMix only seems to work some of the time.

What is AutoMix on Apple Music?

AutoMix is one of Apple Music’s two song transitions. It dynamically transitions between songs from the Apple Music catalog, timing each blend to the music, and it’s only available to Apple Music subscribers.

The other transition is Crossfade, which fades the current song out and the next one in over a set number of seconds that you choose. Crossfade works whether or not you subscribe. You can also turn song transitions off, so songs play back to back.

How to turn off AutoMix on iPhone

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. Tap the MiniPlayer at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Up Next button.
  4. Tap the AutoMix button to turn it off. Tap it again to turn AutoMix back on.

On iPad and Mac, the AutoMix button is in the Up Next view of the playback controls.

Turn off song transitions in Settings

To choose a transition style, or to turn transitions off completely:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps, then Music, then Song Transitions.
  3. Turn Song Transitions off for no transitions, or leave it on and choose AutoMix or Crossfade.
  4. If you choose Crossfade, drag the slider to set how long the current song takes to fade out and the next one takes to fade in.

If AutoMix is grayed out, you don’t have an Apple Music subscription, so Crossfade is the only transition available.

How to turn off AutoMix on Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. From the menu bar, choose Music, then Settings.
  3. Click Playback, then Song Transitions.
  4. Under Transition Style, choose AutoMix or Crossfade, or turn Song Transitions off.

AutoMix needs a Mac with Apple silicon. On an Intel-based Mac, Crossfade is the only transition.

Why does Apple Music only AutoMix sometimes?

AutoMix doesn’t blend every pair of songs. Apple says it might not transition when:

  1. You’re playing an album in order.
  2. The two songs’ genres or tempos don’t fit together.
  3. The songs were uploaded from your own music library.
  4. The songs were bought and downloaded from the iTunes Store.

AutoMix and Crossfade also don’t work with hi-res lossless audio, so if you’ve set your audio quality to hi-res lossless, change it to use either one. AutoMix isn’t available on Apple Watch, Android, or the Apple Music app for Windows.

Listen without AutoMix in Marquee

Marquee is a free Apple Music player, and it doesn’t add AutoMix or Crossfade to your music. Songs play back to back, each one starting and ending as recorded, without changing your settings in Apple’s Music app.

You also get eight player styles to listen with, from a spinning vinyl record to a Retro player inspired by the iPod, plus animated widgets and Last.fm scrobbling.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between AutoMix and Crossfade?

Crossfade fades one song out and the next in over a fixed number of seconds that you set. AutoMix times each transition to the songs themselves, and it needs an Apple Music subscription.

Can you turn off AutoMix on Apple Music?

Yes. Tap the MiniPlayer, tap Up Next, then tap the AutoMix button. To turn off every song transition, go to Settings, then Apps, then Music, then Song Transitions.

Does every song AutoMix on Apple Music?

No. AutoMix may skip transitions when you play an album in order, when songs’ genres or tempos don’t fit, and for songs uploaded from your library or bought from the iTunes Store.

Why is AutoMix grayed out?

AutoMix needs an Apple Music subscription. Without one, Crossfade is the only transition option. It also needs a Mac with Apple silicon on Mac, and it doesn’t work with hi-res lossless audio.

Does AutoMix work with lossless audio?

Not with hi-res lossless. Change your audio quality setting to use AutoMix or Crossfade.

Does Marquee use AutoMix?

No. Marquee doesn’t add AutoMix or Crossfade, so songs play back to back as recorded, whatever your Music app setting is.
